- What if the bands or brackets become loose?
- What if part of the braces (archwire, expander, MARA appliance, powerchain, hook, or ligature) becomes broken or lost?
- What if there is a wire sticking out and poking the mouth?
- What if my mouth feels sore?
- What if my child plays sports? Be sure to mention this to Dr Martin so that he can insure that we provide you with the appropriate lip/teeth protection.
- What if my child plays a wind or brass musical instrument? Most musicians have additional discomfort with the braces during the first week or two of treatment. Dr Martin will insure that they have enough wax and understand how to use it, to get them thru this time.
This means the seal created by the cement has been broken. Call our office to schedule an appointment, as it will require additional time vs. a normal appointment. If the band or bracket has become detached from the wire, save it and take it with you to your next appointment. .
These problems could cause the teeth to shift in the wrong direction and must be corrected as soon as possible. Please call our office to schedule an appointment.
Try to tuck it in with the eraser part of a pencil. If that doesn't work dry it and place wax over the tip of the wire to prevent further irritation. Wax can also be applied to a bracket or hook that is causing discomfort.
Take what ever you would normally take for a mild headache, ie. Advil, aspirin, Tylenol.
You may hold your pointer over a callout to get a definition of the hardware it is referring to.
Orthodontic Alastic: which engages or holds the archwire in the bracket slot
Archwire: The wire that runs thru each bracket and band in an arch or jaw.
Band: The ring of metal with a bracket attached to it that is glued to one of the large posterior teeth.
Bracket: The small rectangular attachment or "handle" bonded to the tooth..
Hooks: Small hooks attached to the brackets or bands, used to attach rubber bands or power-chains
